My other identity

Saturday, May 14th, 2005

I have been remiss in mentioning that I also write for a group blog called The Daily Brief (previously known as Sgt Stryker.com). It’s a blog made up of mostly active or former military folks, who write on everything from their military experiences to politics.
I posted quite often when I first joined […]

Summer Reflections: Note-taking

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

I handed in my grades last Friday and am now kicking back for a few days before tackling summer chores (for me this means acting department chair, freshman orientation, a little research, and fall class prep). I know a lot of profblogs write “end of the academic year” reflections or lessons learned. I […]

Tourism Advice from a seven-year-old

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

Our neighbors went to visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville today. The Biltmore, a palatial mansion and accompanying grounds, was a vacation home for the Vanderbilts earlier this century. I just read in the Citizen-Times that it is the number one tourist destination in North Carolina.
Anyway, before our neighbors left, my daughter offered […]

East Waynesville Baptist — the story ends …

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

… as quickly as it began. The pastor at the East Waynesville Baptist church resigned Tuesday night.
As I suspected, there is another side to the story. The pastor claims that nobody was thrown out for voting for Kerry. An interesting take on all this drama can be found at Christianity Today’s Weblog. […]

That didn’t take long…

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

Yesterday I wrote about a church in neighboring Waynesville where some members claim they’ve been kicked out because of their support for John Kerry. One of my parting comments was “No doubt this will give the Bush-haters more fuel for their fire.”
Today’s Citizen-Times does not disappoint. We have another front page story […]

Politics and the Church

Monday, May 9th, 2005

A little dust-up here in the mountains. In the nearby town of Waynesville, several members of a Baptist Church claim their membership was revoked because they voted for Kerry in November’s election. See the story here and here.
The local paper, the Asheville Citizen-Times, is having a field day. The story […]

Happy Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 8th, 2005

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who might read this (that would probably be my wife, and maybe my mother, if I ever get around to telling her I’ve started this blog).
It would be gratuitous to talk about the importance of mothers, and even stay-at-home moms are getting more respect in the culture these […]

Expelled for Expressing Ideas

Thursday, May 5th, 2005

FIRE reports that Scott McConnell is now suing LeMoyne College in NY. If you haven’t been following this case, McConnell was an education student who was essentially expelled from LeMoyne’s Education program after he wrote a paper expressing doubts about multiculturism and advocating corporal punishment in the classroom.
FIRE tried its usual approach with the […]

What it looks like here

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

In case you’re wondering what it’s like to work in Western North Carolina, here’s a spring photo from outside my office window:

It’s not the greatest picture, but it was taken at the height of the dogwoods blooming. Gorgeous! Note the mountain ridge to the west. We’re actually surrounded by mountains on all […]

Seeking Schedule Nirvana, part II

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

A couple of days ago, I promised to address the issue of 8AM classes (Penn State is reducing the number of 8AM classes it teaches).
I have mixed emotions about this one. I taught 8AM classes at Western in my two previous semesters (Spring and Fall ‘04). In one semester it was Software Engineering, […]
