Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman were my musical heroes growing up. I began playing the trombone in 1969, and not long after that, I began listening to my Dad’s extensive collection of Big Band records (including LPs by Dorsey, Miller, Goodman, and many, many others). Dorsey’s horn playing was incredibly melodic; many of us thought it was cool to learn the opening bars to Dorsey’s trombone solo in “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You.”
