Miscellaneous Items Two Days Before Classes Begin

Not much time for any original blog-thinking, so here are some random thoughts:

1. We went out to eat at the local Chinese restaurant tonight. Here was the fortune in my wife’s cookie:

Behind an able man, there are always.

Words to live by. Or, maybe I should say, words to live.

2. Looks like the lottery in NC is definitely a no-go this year. The story in today’s paper says that that the Senate is “one vote short” of lottery passage. Don’t these legislators know this lottery is for the children? Here’s a mind-boggling passage from the story:

Lawmakers have already decided where the state’s rake of lottery proceeds will go — school construction, college scholarships for low-income students, and [NC Governor Michael] Easley’s initiatives to reduce class sizes and prepare 4-year-olds for kindergarten. (Emphasis added)

“Prepare 4-year-olds for kindergarten”? I don’t recall it being that taxing for the kindergarteners. Maybe I could see preparing the kindergarten teachers for the 5-year-olds.

And by the way, we’re doing our part to help reduce class sizes. :-)

3. Inside Higher Ed has more on the continuing saga of the NCAA’s dislike for “Native American” mascots. This is of particular interest to me, being a graduate of both FSU and University of Illinois. Apparently, the NCAA has backtracked, and is willing to consider “extenuating circumstances” in some cases. But what I found most interesting was a comment to the story (Inside Higher Ed allows comments to stories, similar to comments on blog posts). I can’t tell if it’s parody or real. Here’s the first paragraph:

Another Bush victory awaits

Jeb Bush begins yet another fight for his state. In a wording change almost as nicely timed as his brother’s addition of “convicted of a crime? in protecting Rove, the NCAA seems to be creating a loophole in which they can allow another Bush conspiracy to be looked over. I use this as an example and not as an anti-Republican or whatever stance.

Puzzling.

Can’t read the items in the boxes, David. Too small to be legible.

I bet it’s all good though!!

  2. David Says:

I’m sorry, Mrs. Ris. It appears to be an Internet Explorer issue. I’ll see what I can do.

  3. David Says:

OK. There appears to be an issue with unordered lists in this Wordpress theme. It’s OK in Firefox but it really makes things small in IE. I have removed the offending tags and have just numbered the items, which seems to have fixed things

  4. Ticklish Ears » Blog Archive » Update on the NC Lottery Says:

[…] When I last addressed the topic of the lottery, over a month ago, the NC State Senate was one vote short of passage (apparently, the NC House had already approved the lottery). We thought it was dead for this session. […]
